Housing Policy Advocate/Community Organizer

The Los Angeles Coalition To End Hunger & Homelessness is seeking a Housing Policy Advocate/Community Organizer: Half-time Consultant August 7, 2008

The Los Angeles Coalition to End Hunger & Homelessness (LACEH&H) is a public policy and community organizing non-profit organization that is at the forefront of the Campaign to end homelessness movement in Los Angeles County.
We help build coalitions of homeless and formerly homeless people, community and faith-based organizations to win strategic policies that create change at the local, state and federal levels for extremely low-income communities.
LACEH&H has led winning campaigns for social justice policies over several years and continues to be a leader in advocating for the rights of homeless people throughout Los Angeles County.

We are seeking a community organizer/housing policy advocate on a half-time consulting basis (with potential to lead to a full-time position) to support and reenergize the Los Angeles Housing Justice Coalition. Currently with over 100 organizational members, this coalition organizes recipients of Section 8 and community based organizations to advocate for the expansion of Section 8 vouchers as well as other federal programs such as CDBG and Section 811,
locally and at the national levels. The position will staff the membership,
including providing updates, prepare monthly meetings and organize low-income people who rely on Section 8 vouchers and Section 811 housing to educate our local, state and national delegations about expanding affordable housing programs, instead of cutting them. The staff person will represent LACEH&H to Housing LA and finalize our current work on the LA City Housing Element. This position is directly supervised by the Executive Director.

The ideal candidate will:
§ Demonstrate strong organizational skills
§ Demonstrate strong writing and speaking skills

§ Be detail oriented
§ Have the skills to bring together community stakeholders
§ Be able to work independently and collaborate with LACEH&H staff and
community stakeholders, including homeless and formerly homeless individuals and families
§ Provide the overall leadership and staffing to local homeless

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 2 years related experience.
Requirements include a broad working knowledge of community organizing and advocacy. Community and human relations skills are vital. Knowledge of homeless services is a plus. Proven team building and organization are key. Excellent written and oral skills and computer literacy a must.

Preferred Requirements:
§ Two years experience in advocacy and community organizing
§ Basic knowledge of advocacy at the local, state, federal levels
§ Knowledge of affordable housing issues
§ Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy or related field preferred
