About SCANPH

WHO WE ARE

Incorporated in 1985, SCANPH is dedicated to the production, preservation and management of permanently affordable homes for low-income households, and believes that non-profit community development organizations (CDCs) are the best vehicle for achieving this goal. SCANPH is a membership organization. Our members include 450 organizations, public agencies and individuals, of which approximately one-third are CDCs that actively build homes affordable to low-income people in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Ventura counties. Our members include over half of all of the CDCs in California, and have produced over 65,000 apartments, condominiums and houses throughout the region. The vast majority of SCANPH’s members, and the homes they build and manage, are located in Los Angeles County. SCANPH members serve the recently homeless, disabled households, seniors on fixed-incomes, and the working poor.

WHAT WE DO

Our work increases the capacity and expertise of our members, educates policymakers and the public about the need for affordable housing, and helps develop policies and programs that further this cause. SCANPH’s activities are organized into three program areas:
  1. Member Services
  2. Public Policy; and
  3. Strategic Communications.

MEMBER SERVICES

Member Services coordinates more than a dozen forums throughout the year on development related topics, initiates "best practices" research for publication, produces a Membership and Resource Directory, and an annual conference of workshops, awards and plenary discussions that attracts over 750 participants.

PUBLIC POLICY

The Public Policy Program includes research and documentation of innovative ways to encourage the production of housing that people can afford, and the development and advocacy -- with allied private, public and social sector stakeholders -- of new housing policy initiatives. SCANPH’s policy goals for 2007-2008 include increasing the number of city housing trust funds in our region, increasing municipal revenue dedicated to low-income housing programs, creating new local planning and zoning incentives for low-income housing, and significantly increasing community support for affordable housing.

STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS

SCANPH’s Strategic Communications utilizes email, newsletters, press advisories and web posting to deliver housing-related news and information to members, elected officials and the media. Increasing the sophistication and distribution of information about affordable housing is a primary objective for 2007.
